Welcome to live coverage of the final match between South Africa and India at Newlands, Cape Town. India is coming off a heavy defeat in the opening match, having lost by an innings and 32 runs. Despite strong individual performances by KL Rahul in the first innings and Kohli in the second, the team's overall performance left much to be desired. This loss means their aspiration to clinch a series win on South African turf is postponed. India aims to make a strong comeback and draw the series. Avesh Khan is expected to make his debut, replacing Prasidh Krishna, and Jadeja is likely to come in for Ashwin, having recovered from his spasm. South Africa enters the game buoyed by their comprehensive victory in the first match. The team will miss Bavuma due to injury, and Elgar will lead in what is his final Test. South Africa is seeking to maintain their form and secure another win.

When it comes to head-to-head records in the 43 matches played between these two giants, South Africa has a slight edge with 18 wins compared to India's 15, while 10 matches have ended in a draw. Specifically, in South Africa, out of 24 encounters, the host country has triumphed 13 times, and India has managed 4 victories.

Pitch Report : Sanjay Manjrekar:"There is grass inside the cracks, which might lead the ball to behave as it would on a barren patch. South Africa is a very unique place to bowl, and I feel that seamers will continue to get help on every day of the Test."

TOSS : South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first

Dean Elgar : "Going to bat. The pitch looks interesting. We're in a great position. Can't win a two-match series if you don't win the first - we've crossed that hurdle. The scoreboard starts on nought. We all know that. Starting well is going to be key against this Indian side. We've got a debutant in Tristan Stubbs coming in for Temba. Ngidi comes in for Coetzee who's also injured. And Maharaj comes in."

Rohit Sharma : "Would've batted first as well. Looks a good pitch. We understand the challenge of batting first on that pitch, but nevertheless, there will be enough in the pitch for the seamers, so hopefully, we'll cash in on it. It's important to forget what's happened in the past. We understand the importance of getting runs on the board, and getting 20 wickets. Didn't happen in the first game, but we're upbeat about what we can achieve here. Two changes. Jadeja comes back for Ashwin. Shardul misses out, Mukesh Kumar replaces him."

In a remarkable turn of events at Newlands, India leveled the series with a historic win, becoming the first Asian team to conquer South Africa on this iconic ground. The Test unfolded at a breakneck pace, becoming the shortest completed match in cricket's history, concluding in just over four sessions. Opting to bat, South Africa crumbled to 55 all out in their first innings, their lowest score post-readmission, with Mohammed Siraj delivering a career-best 6 for 15. India initially steadied the ship but then experienced a dramatic collapse, ending at 153, setting a modest lead.Day 2 was no less thrilling. Jasprit Bumrah's early strikes and a collective bowling effort kept the Proteas in check. Aiden Markram stood out with a defiant century in treacherous conditions, giving South Africa a glimmer of hope. However, his dismissal signaled a swift end to their innings, setting India a target of 79. India's top order, despite a few stumbles, chased down the total with Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer steering the ship home.

Dean Elgar Captain|Player of the Series : "This game was tough for us, yet I entered it feeling positive. Though I wish I could've done more here, I'm still very proud of my performance at Centurion and contributing to a win. The conditions were challenging throughout the series. It would have been great to have a 3-Test series to further challenge ourselves against top players like Bumrah, who is truly world-class and deserves recognition. I'm glad I won't have to face this bowling attack again but I'll carry fond memories. We've come a long way since I received my green cap in 2012, and I've hardly missed a series since then. It holds a special place in my heart. As for this series, while a 2-0 win would have been ideal, managing a 1-1 draw is something I'm proud of for the team. The bowlers' performance and Aiden's batting in the second innings were exceptional. The pitch was deceptive, playing very differently than expected and presented a significant learning curve for us. Though India outplayed us in that crucial first session, these experiences only add to the journey, and I'm grateful for every moment spent competing at this level."

Jasprit Bumrah | Player of the Series: "Newlands will forever hold a special place in my heart, marking the beginning of my journey and filled with fond memories. I'm elated that today went well for us. It all started back in 2018 when our bowling unit was keen to make an impact. In India, it's usually the spinners taking the lead, but our team, now in transition, sees a lot of new bowlers stepping in. Our constant message is about team spirit and resilience. We showed that fight in the last game and continued it here, which requires immense patience. It's a delight to see our efforts come to fruition in this game. The pace at which the match concluded was unexpected, and like our counterparts, we too preferred batting first. Test cricket always has its surprises, making this a fantastic series."

Mohammed Siraj | Player of the Match: "These are my best figures in my Test career. My focus was on being consistent and targeting the right areas. In the previous match, I wasn't as consistent, leading to conceding extra runs. So, I really worked hard on maintaining consistency and being relentless with my lengths. Playing alongside Bumrah, we understand each other well and quickly adapt to the pitch conditions. A big shout out to the fans — thank you so much for your constant support, please keep it coming!"

Rohit Sharma| Captain: "It's a great feat. We had a learning curve in Centurion and came back strongly here, especially our bowlers who adapted and executed our plans well. We applied ourselves with the bat to secure a significant lead, though the loss of the last six wickets wasn't ideal. We were aware it might be a short game, so every run was crucial. Siraj's performance was very special and rare. We emphasized on keeping things simple, and he, along with the pitch conditions, did the rest. Immense credit to Siraj, Bumrah, Mukesh, and Prasidh for their remarkable efforts."

Welcome to the live coverage of the opening match in the two-Test series between South Africa and India at SuperSport Park, Centurion. India, bolstered by their ODI series win and a drawn T20 series, steps onto the field with high spirits and a formidable lineup. The inclusion of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma adds significant strength and experience to the team. They aim to translate their white-ball success into the longer format and secure a historic series win on South African soil, a feat yet to be achieved by the side.

Head-to-Head:

South Africa and India have faced each other in 42 matches, with South Africa holding a slight edge with 17 wins compared to India's 15, while 10 matches have ended in a draw. In South Africa, the teams have clashed 23 times, with the hosts winning 12 and India clinching 4 victories.

PITCH REPORT

Shaun Pollock and Ravi Shastri observe a healthy grass cover, suggesting teams generally prefer to bat first as the pitch initially plays slower. As the Test unfolds, varying bounce might present challenges, making batting increasingly difficult. Weather conditions may tempt South Africa to forgo a spinner, but sunshine could deepen cracks and invite spin. The pitch's character isn't expected to drastically shift throughout the game. The optimal strategy is to bat first, navigate the initial sessions cautiously, and aim to be no more than two wickets down by Lunch.

TOSS : SOUTH AFRICA WON THE TOSS AND ELECT TO BOWL

Temba Bavuma : "We are opting to bowl first due to the wicket's moisture from being under covers, aiming to leverage it for early breakthroughs. Most of our squad is in peak condition, though Lungi is still getting there. Today, we introduce two debutants, Nandre Burger and David Bedingham, and are going with a four-seamer attack. It's always tough against India, but we're well-prepared and ready to take them on."

Rohit Sharma : "I wasn't entirely sure about choosing to bat or bowl, but we're well acquainted with these conditions. Our strategy is to post a competitive total and let our bowlers take over. Despite the overhead conditions and grass, we're ready for the challenge. We've come close in the last two tours, boosting our confidence in our squad's composition. We're playing four seamers and Ashwin as a spinner in place of Jadeja, who has a back spasm. Prasidh is making his debut today, alongside Shardul, Siraj, and Bumrah."

In a challenging three-day match, South Africa clinched victory, but not without a resilient fight from India, marked by KL Rahul's commendable century. As South Africa leveraged home advantage, India showed moments of brilliance and potential for adaptation. The series moves forward with both teams looking to capitalize on their strengths, with India keen on rectifying mistakes and harnessing their positives as they head to Johannesburg.

Rohit Sharma | India Captain"It's clear we weren't good enough; despite a decent start, we couldn't capitalize. KL was exceptional, but as a unit, our batting faltered, especially in the second innings. Each player knows the demands of these conditions, yet our adaptation was inadequate. Not many positives in such a quick finish, but KL's innings stood out. I won't be too harsh on our bowlers, given their limited exposure here. We're determined to regroup and come back stronger; it's about how we rise after a tough loss. We've got to lift ourselves and move forward."

Dean Elgar | Player of the Match | South Africa Captain" This knock was pretty special. We kept things simple, which is key in a complex game. Forming good partnerships and utilizing our bowlers, including Nadre's standout performance, was crucial. The support from the Pretoria crowd was fantastic. It's just the start, and we're keen to enjoy this win before the next challenge.
